Charlotte
Schatz was born and raised in Philadelphia. She attended the Tyler School of
Art where she majored in Sculpture. Jim Sterrit was her mentor and Italo Scanga
was her muse. SchatzÕs abstract geometric sculptures of plastics, metals,
mirrors and lights was widely exhibited and garnered many awards for the next
15 years.
In 1973,
she was hired to teach Sculpture and Design at Bucks County Community College,
retiring in 2003 as Professor Emeritus.
She
returned to painting in the 1980Õs and has continued her work to the present.
Always a socially conscious person, her work reflects her ideology. The later
work is inspired by the geometry and architecture of the buildings and detritus
of the Industrial Era. Since many of these structures no longer exist,
there is a historic aspect to the work that has been described by Robin Rice as
Ò....resurrected relics of power which have a new life in memoryÓ. Form
and color have been primary concerns in all her work. Always a colorist,
her "Urban Ruins Transformed" represent her interest in the palette
of the Fauves, the early work of the Precisionists that depicted mechanical and
industrial subject matter and her continuing interest in the work of
Jasper Johns.
She was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2004
a Leeway Foundation Grant for Established Arists in 2000. She has
exhibited widely on the East Coast in Solo and Group shows. Her work is
represented in private and public collections throughout the United States, in
France and Venezuela. She maintains a studio in the Kensington section of
Philadelphia where she has been working on a large commission for a
factory in New Jersey.
