ARTIST'S
STATEMENT
I like to think of my paintings as subconscious mirrors and that the relationship between the viewer and my work is a personal one. I create narratives that are open ended and I allow my subconscious to wander freely as I paint. Consequently, the story lines evolve as I work on each piece. A painting may hold multiple meanings for the viewer and these meanings can change over time, as they do for me. I incorporate variations of traditional painting techniques that invite viewers to enter these alternate worlds and discover what these mirrors hold for them.
Tim S. Murphy creates
figurative narrative oil paintings that invite the viewer to project
interpretation into the art works. The weightless flying figures are
spiritually inspired to encourage a lighthearted fantasy for the viewer and the
locations are based on places of personal significance. The figures in his work
are both specific individuals and amalgamations of specific people in his life.
Originally from Boston
Massachusetts, Tim graduated with honors receiving his BFA from Massachusetts
College of Art. He also studied at the MFA painting program at the University
of the Arts in Philadelphia. Mr. Murphy has been a practicing artist and
teacher in cities from Boston, San Jose, Nashville, and Providence to
Philadelphia. He has been a faculty member at OÕMore College of Design in
Nashville and has taught figure painting and drawing at the Cheekwood Museum of
Art. He currently lives and works in the Philadelphia area and maintains a
studio at the historic 915 Spring Garden studio building in Philadelphia.
