Schooled
at UC Berkeley and apprenticed in NYC, Douglas has worked as a photographer for
nearly 20 years. His first editorial break was fueled by a photographic love
for dance and dancers as he spent a month touring Japan & shooting backstage
for American Ballet Theater.
A
love for Asia ensued, so Douglas returned to live in Hong Kong, where he
directed TV commercials and was the creative director for an interactive
nightclub featuring flight & submarine simulators.
After
four years, he returned to New York City, where he was commissioned by Simon
& Schuster to photograph and co-write a book on Michael and Mario Andretti
at the Indianapolis 500.
In
the 90Õs, Douglas opened a photo studio on Fifth Avenue in NYC (which he still
runs). Known for its award-winning use of digital technology, it has completed
major creative projects for LeviÕs, Sony, LÕOreal, Nikon, Microsoft and Shu
Uemura.
At
the bandÕs request, Douglas simultaneously began a 3-year project photographing
backstage for The Grateful Dead. Subsequently, he spent 6 years photographing
the NYC fashion runway shows (7th on 6th), both backstage
and traditionally.
DouglasÕ
two current projects involve large-scale (3Õ x 5Õ) printing on pure translucent
silk. Both series are abstractions; one is based upon his photographs of nature
and the other is based upon his female figure studies.
